Housing Programs

camillus house

All our efforts for homeless Vets center on building a supportive community for those who sacrificed for our country. But providing Vets with a safe roof overhead – whether emergency shelter, transitional housing, or permanent housing – is our top priority, and an essential step in helping them piece their lives back together. More than 1,700 individuals and families are kept off the streets through our Emergency, Transitional, and Permanent housing programs. All our housing initiatives link to other Camillus support programs, providing clients with comprehensive healthcare and social services to transform their future.

Families with Children

Our vision for tomorrow is always built on the ideals of our founding mission which aims to provide every client with opportunities to combine personal and community resources in order to affect physical, mental and spiritual well-being. Helping an individual or family rebound from homelessness begins by providing them with a safe place to live. Camillus House has provided humanitarian services to the indigent and homeless populations of Miami-Dade County, Florida for more than 40 years. Butto protect residents and staff from the still-expanding pandemic, the shelterdecided early to tightly restrict movement in and out.

Crime & Safety

Camillus House is now the most broad-based homeless services provider in our community, helping the poor and vulnerable not only with food and shelter but with clothing, job training, counseling, medical assistance, and other tools that help rebuild broken lives. We seek in all our works to keep alive the spirit of compassionate service that marked Camillus from the start. Camillus House’s rapid rehousing program provides rental assistance and support services to those in need. While the program varies by an individual’s circumstances and needs, we aim to help participants transition to independent living within six months. It gets those experiencing homelessness into permanent housing quickly – and it helps them stay there.

Family Housing

Each service is carried out with the deeply held belief that every human being deserves love, respect and an opportunity to live a dignified life. Each night, more than 1,000 persons are provided emergency transitional or permanent housing in one of the 13 residential facilities operated by Camillus House, from Homestead to Opa-Locka. Camillus provides more than 600,000 free meals per year, and 25,000 medical encounters on an annual basis through its sister agency, Camillus Health Concern. They may not fit the stereotype, but many who are homeless or at-risk for homelessness are families with small children.

We presently provide a safe and comfortable place to live for 700+ family members in Camillus-operated apartments or townhouses. Freed from the looming worry of a safe place for their family to live, breadwinners can focus on addressing the root causes of their homelessness. And, with the guidance of experienced and dedicated caseworkers, they can conquer them. Camillus House provides a range of supportive services to help mothers and fathers with life skills, basic cooking, job training, personal counseling, day care and other transformative tools. Once a strong foundation is built and obstacles are overcome, many of our families “graduate” from Camillus housing to independent living. That’s why Camillus House is committed to the difficult but critical work of helping returning servicemembers reintegrate into society.

Camillus House provides humanitarian services to men, women and children who are poor and homeless. Staff also determined toscreen residents for coronavirus regularly, using a tool from the Centers forDisease Control. When an individual or family is homeless, there’s no higher priority than a safe place to live. That’s why Camillus House provides every kind of housing – Emergency, Transitional, and Permanent – depending on need. Through our services, we address immediate needs and provide tools, guidance, and a pathway to help our clients create a better future. The programs focus on training individuals for high-demand skills in the culinary arts, construction trade, and security field, among others. Camillus House provides substance abuse treatment services through our Institute of Success and Personal Achievement (ISPA) to individuals who are actively using substances and who are homeless in Miami. Our programs and services have helped improve the quality of life of those who are vulnerable and homeless in South Florida. Those supplies helped keep Camillus’ 400-plusresidents occupied while socially distancing from the wider community — just asmall part of the toolbox that Fernandez and her staff have been using to keepthe residents safe during quarantine. Camillus House envisions its service to the poor and homeless as a continuum of care which empowers clients towards personal rehabilitation and proactive integration as productive members of the general population. Established by the Little Brothers of the Good Shepherd in 1960, Camillus House has grown steadily over the years from a small overnight shelter into a full service center offering a full "continuum of care" for the poor and homeless.

"Wewill continue to have measures in place to ensure that we minimize any risk ofinfection being brought onto our campus,” she said. Fernandezand her team also drew up an exhaustive list of campus and operational modificationsto foster better social distancing and disinfection measures. You can look to Camillus House to provide support and resources on your journey to a more enriching life.

Camillus House provides assistance to households at risk of becoming homeless due to court-ordered eviction, or for similar reasons. Assistance to individuals and families who qualify for help from Camillus House depends on the specifics of homeless prevention programs we offer. Camillushas continued its day center services for the street homeless, includingbreakfast, the mail room, clothing donations and other services. Thatprogram has been significantly modified, however, with new protocols to ensuresafety and prevent an outbreak. To protect themselves and others during the COVID-19 pandemic, Camillus House has invested heavily this year in wash stations and high tech sanitation devices strategically deployed around the homeless shelter's property.

Resident guests at Camillus House in downtown Miami also are socially distancing, wearing face masks and helping with clean up duties at the homeless shelter. We provide compassionate care to individuals and families impacted by homelessness, hunger, poverty, and substance abuse. Rooted in the compassionate Hospitality of St. John of God, we improve the quality of life of those who are vulnerable and homeless in South Florida through the provision of a continuum of housing and supportive services.

Live your best life by helping our community’s most vulnerable to get their’s back! To protect themselves and others during the COVID-19 pandemic, resident guests line up six feet apart to enter the dining room at Camillus House in downtown Miami. Even asMiami-Dade County reopens, Camillus House will likely continue its new safetyand social distancing protocols, according to Fernandez. Toassist its sister agency, Camillus Health Concern, to help chronically homelessand mentally ill living on the streets, Fernandez said her team set up anoutdoor tented station on the property for COVID-19 testing. We seek to heal homeless individuals struggling with addiction, and with mental illnesses including PTSD, bipolar disorder, depression, paranoia, and anxiety disorder – and we often succeed.

Our outreach teams also partner with school personnel, police departments and others to identify homeless households. Because emergency shelters in Miami-Dade County do not take walk-ins, the Homeless Helpline is the best way to secure help for anyone experiencing homelessness. In all, more than a thousand individuals including youth who have aged out of the foster care system, the elderly and most vulnerable among us are provided with a safe and dignified place to live each night.

Because people with secure housing are freed up to focus on finding employment, overcoming substance abuse, or other challenges that may have led to their homelessness in the first place. We are a private, non-profit organization that provides comprehensive health care, behavioral health and social services to men, women and children who are poor and homeless in Miami-Dade County. Camillus House residentswho were getting ready to move out are finding it a difficult if not impossibleclimate for apartment searches. The outside community is a little leery ofhaving people out on the streets, and Camillus House is trying to limit itsguests’ movement outside the shelter. Our homeless outreach specialists hit Miami’s downtown streets daily, seeking out the mentally ill, the severely addicted, and the chronically homeless. We work to earn their trust, address their specific needs, and improve their lives – helping them to rejoin society when possible. Services are provided by Camillus House staff 7 days a week, 24 hours a a day in a safe and secure living environment. Each resident is assigned a counselor and case manager who is responsible for the residents’ service coordination and the development and implementation of an Individualized Treatment Plan.

Honoring the Brave with Life-Changing Programs

Designated access points are also established to assess and assist vulnerable homeless sub-populations, including unaccompanied youth, persons fleeing or attempting to flee domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault or stalking and veterans. For more than 60 years, Camillus House has provided material aid and hope to Miami-Dade County’s hungry and homeless. Camillus House and Camillus Health programs and activities are accessible to and usable by disabled persons, including persons who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind, or who have other sensory impairments. A full range of assistive and communication aid are available free of charge to assist any disable persons.

The Olde Pink House Review Historic District North Savannah

the olde pink house photos

Patrons dine immersed in the architecture and atmosphere of 18th century Savannah brought to life by one of its earliest leading citizens. Over 250 years later, the mansion remains one of the premier illustrations of Georgian architecture in Savannah. The striking pink facade also rendered the mansion instantly recognizable in the local landscape, with the color chosen as a proud nod to Habersham's English heritage. The ornate brick and pink stucco edifice with its symmetrical layout exemplified the Georgian style then fashionable throughout the colonies. Arched windows flanked by columns, iron-railed balconies, and a signature white ornamental iron fence cast in Savannah all exuded an air of refinement. In exploring the history of the Olde Pink House, we peel back the layers of this Southern icon to reveal its origins, illustrious inhabitants, and evolving identity across centuries at the heart of Savannah.

The Third Los Angeles Times Building

If you’re a current Angeleno, you might be saddened to hear the roads weren’t always so jam-packed during rush hour. In fact, they definitely didn’t even have a “rush hour.” To this day, we’re still talking about the Beatles’ performance at the Hollywood Bowl, and any view from Sunset Boulevard looks like it came from a movie. Here are major moments, views, and people who defined Los Angeles over the years.

Will Rogers' Home in Will Rogers State Historic Park

In 2010, a dozen years after his death, his name was added to the Palm Springs Walk of Stars, a monument comprised of stars embedded in a downtown sidewalk that honors people who have made significant contributions to the city. Mr. Stewart, a principal of the design firm Stewart Mohr Designs, has been in business since 1985. In addition to the Old Las Palmas residence, he said he has worked on other Palm Springs projects as well as on homes in Palm Beach, Malibu Canyon, in Los Angeles, and the Florida Gulf Coast. The stately mansion surely felt livelier during the Clay's residency than in its previous incarnation as a more staid family estate for James Habersham Jr. But the Clays upheld the home's refined atmosphere, using its grand spaces as the backdrop for some of Savannah's most memorable early 19th century social events.

The Los Angeles Times Building

Guests delighted in dancing the evening away in the grand first floor ballroom or discussing politics and business in the dining room over sumptuous meals. During Clay's tenure as mayor of Savannah from 1805 to 1806, he and his family took up residence in the mansion. Footsteps, voices, and moving objects remind visitors that while the Olde Pink House offers a glimpse into the past, some aspects of its bygone eras may continue to inhabit the present day. Yet some claim even more tangible remnants of the mansion's history remain. Its brick walls, burled wood accents, and dim atmosphere evoke 19th century revelry, likely not so different from when city leaders and planners would discuss business over cards and whiskey.

There are the sandy beaches, streets lined with palm trees, and more celebrities than IMDb can count. But we’re narrowing in on the last 100 years or so, when we started seeing studios pop up all over town and Old Hollywood took over. From the founding of the Griffith Observatory to the history-making O.J. Simpson chase to the recent California wildfires, we’re looking at (almost) everything that’s transpired in L.A. The public is invited to visit the Eames House for a self-guided tour of the exterior during open hours. Groups with 10 or more visitors must make an appointment and sign a group release form prior to visiting.

Guided, one-hour personal tours of the interior are available for $275 (1-2 adults) and $450 (3-4 adults). Diehard fans can indulge in an Eames tradition, a picnic in the house meadow, for $750 (1-4 adults). Though some may doubt it's angelic qualities, most of us can agree that Los Angeles, California has a lot to offer including many unique and impressive sights (and sites). Many hands, many years, many disasters have shaped and molded Los Angeles into what it is today, and that important history deserves to be honored. The 1964 city landmarked house on North Camino Centro, designed by architects Albert Frey and Robson Chambers, is in the celebrity-studded neighborhood of Old Las Palmas, which harks back to the Golden Age of Hollywood.

The war had taken its toll on Savannah, so operating the old house as a hotel provided much needed accommodations. Los Angeles is a city that is constantly changing, which makes looking at old pictures of the LA area a strange experience. Though the city's history goes back much further, California's induction into the United States and the railroad's arrival in the mid-19th century resulted in a massive immigration boom and breakneck industrialization. He built a number of significant buildings there, including the Palm Springs City Hall, which dates to 1952.

Java is also opening more stores in neighbourhoods in Nairobi to be closer to places where people live, and in leading towns outside of Nairobi such as Naivasha situated 90km from the capital. “Those first three to five years were really tough. We were not really sure who we were at the time, the brand was still developing and some people within the group wanted to start selling alcohol while others wanted to stay a family-oriented joint,” he recalls. Ashley says growing Java from one to four stores was the “hardest part” because the firm’s finances were too limited to afford quality expertise. A business graduate, Ashley did relief work in South Sudan for five years, then co-founded an aviation business in the war-torn country. “When we started Java we were really interested in trying to create something in Kenya that was more stable than flying airplanes in war zones,” he says.

Java House is now one of the leading coffee brands in Africa and has grown to have outlets in 14 cities across 3 countries in East Africa (Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda). It has also birthed two sister brands Planet Yogurt, a healthy, tasty and fun frozen yogurt store and 360 Degrees Pizza, a casual dining restaurant. These pods are great for the summer as they are just enough to toss in my magic bullet add some milk and syrup and I end up with a Frappuccino that beats my favorites at Starbucks.

Our First Java House

Maintaining this culture is one of the challenges Ashley anticipates in future months as the company continues to grow. He notes Java customers are people who “have a certain income that allows them a quality of life that many can’t afford”. At Java a large cappuccino and muffin will cost you just about $4.5 while a lunch meal of chips, burger, vegetables on the side and a glass of juice would cost an average of $10. When Java started in 1999, Kenya’s economy was struggling, there was no coffee drinking culture and there were no modern shopping malls. Kevin Ashley, co-founder and CEO of Nairobi Java House, tells How we made it in Africa he never imagined Java would become this big a success. The firm has 1,200 staff and is expanding fast, opening 12 stores a year.
